For this project, I decided to ask my friends about their experiences as teenagers in the 2020s, particularly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many shared that, as a result of our increased reliance on the digital world during COVID, they found themselves overwhelmed by the constant pressures of social media and the online space, which have become more dominant in our lives.

It’s crucial to remember that the online world is not the reality—real life is what truly matters. Being present and connecting with nature, friends, and family is key.

It’s no surprise that mental health issues have risen to alarming levels since the pandemic and the digital surge. We’ve become absorbed by our screens and, in doing so, forgotten what life is really about. The superficial aspects of the internet should not define our feelings or control our lives. We’ve created a new reality, a parallel world that adds to our worries. Unfortunately, children born today will never know a world without digital influence, which is why I want to hold on to my analogue memories for as long as I can—they bring peace and authenticity to our rapidly evolving world.

That being said, the internet isn’t all negative. It’s a powerful tool for connection and exploration. However, it’s essential to know when to disconnect and recognise what truly matters—and what doesn’t.

Throughout my project, Generation, I’ve used expressive mark-making on the backgrounds to reflect the chaotic and tangled nature of the digital world. It’s a visual representation of how our teenage brains are bombarded with constant information and distractions—something we never would have encountered 30 years ago.

The project centres around my friends and specific memories that make me smile and feel grounded. These moments remind me to stay positive and present, and I incorporate them into my work as a way to anchor myself in reality. Generation is an ongoing project, and I plan to continue adding to it in the future.
